Dion
Situated
at the foot of Mt Olympus, the mythical home of the Olympic Gods
(12 main Greek gods), Dion was long a site of worship. Both
Phillip and Alexander, the two great kings from Northern Greece
(Macedonia), made sacrifices here to Zeus, the chief Olympic
god, before and after their victories.
Although some traditional Olympic Gods were worshipped here
(Aphrodite, Demeter, and Zeus), by the time of Christ worship
tended toward Dionysos, Asklepius and Hellenized forms of
Egyptian Gods, a pattern common throughout ancient Greece.
